EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in a Health Science field, Education or Administration; or, Bachelor's degree in another field with the completion of a minimum of two year Clinical Program required. Master's degree preferred. Two years of clinical and supervisory experience required. Two years' perinatal pediatric respiratory care experience in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and/or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit preferred. Two years' clinical experience as an extra corporeal life support specialist in a recognized program of Extra Corporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) required. Clinical research and clinical education experience preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:
Certification as an Extra Corporeal Life Support Specialist. Registered (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care and licensed to practice as a RCP in the State of North Carolina or Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and licensed to practice as a perfusionist in the State of North Carolina or graduation from an accredited School of Nursing and Registered Nurse Licensure from the State of Noth Carolina Board of Nursing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
- Serves as a national representative from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist to the Extra Corporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) on all ECMO activities. Attends national and regional ECMO conferences serving as a representative, as required. Maintains current knowledge of ECMO procedures, techniques, and research and enhances knowledge to improve professional growth and development.
- Provides leadership to staff to ensure short and long-term goals are met by developing standards of performance and capitalizing on employee strengths. Manages staff through coaching, training, and conducting Annual Employee Reviews. Performs supervisory activities including researching/gathering information on issues/complaints and seeking resolution. Monitors and evaluates changing trends in clinical areas. Applies, monitors, and enforces compliance with policies, regulating agency standards. Assists with policy development and changes.
- Collaborates closely with leadership from Respiratory Care Services Department, Perfusion Services and Critical Care Nursing. Facilitates in-service education and staff development classes. Provides support as appropriate and necessary as the demands of the ECMO Program allow.
- Participate in the creation and maintenance of the budget for ECMO Program. Reviews and makes recommendations for capital and non-capital equipment. Ensures that appropriate supplies are available to provide ECMO, as required.
- Assures compliance with hospital/departmental policies and procedures and accreditation agency regulations.
- Establishes and implements clinical coverage requirements, task assignments and allocation of clinical personnel to assure compliance with departmental commitments and quality standards of the ECMO Program. Performs periodic rounds for evaluation of appropriate ECMO techniques.
- Coordinates educational activities of the extra corporeal life support specialists, medical staff, nursing staff, patients and family, and other allied health services to ensure that knowledge and ability for safe and competent clinical performance of ECMO procedures are maintained.
- Ensures age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
- Coordinates and documents all iNO hours and use throughout the Hospital and documents its use in all patient populations.
- Manages ongoing operations to maintain and optimize the service. Facilitates weekly ECMO patient review meeting, manages EMR activation and on-call mechanisms for ECMO team.
- Participates in staffing and call coverage among the ECMO specialists. 70% clinical, 30% administrative effort.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent communication, organization, and administrative skills
- Ability to function in occasional high stress environments
- Experience in program development and marketing strategies preferred
- Contact with departmental administrative staff, ECMO physician staff, Perfusion staff, Nursing, medical and allied health staffs, interdepartmental, intra-departmental, external national and regional ECMO Programs, referring physician staffs, health care industry representatives, vendors, hospital committees, and hospital physicians

The ECMO Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operational, clinical, and administrative coordination of the ECMO program. Collaborate directly with the ECMO Medical Directors in the continued development, organization, evaluation and sustainment of the ECMO program. Coordinates the evaluation, hospitalization and follow-up phases of ECMO patients. Maintains databases and develops educational programs for staff and patients. Assists in the treatment of patients of all ages, provides education and other services to ensure a positive outcome. Provides productive leadership, direction, guidance and support to the Medical Directors and Service Line Director to achieve the department's mission and goals. Promotes growth and development of the service. The ECMO manager is responsible for implementing comprehensive program policies and procedures including quality standards and patient safety guidelines, maintaining ELSO accreditation, managing the team, supervising ECMO specialists. ensuring adequate training and competency, leading and coordinating training for healthcare professionals, participating in research initiatives related to ECMO technology and patient care, analyzing data to identify qualify improvement, and implementing evidence-based practices to optimize patient outcomes.
